Lab as a Service (LaaS) - Helping Utilities De-Risk Digital Programs

Over the past year, one capability that has generated significant interest from utilities and technology partners is N3Edge’s Lab as a Service (LaaS).
Originally developed to support internal device integration and platform testing, the lab has quickly evolved into a shared capability that organisations across the water and gas sectors are now using to validate technology before large-scale deployment.
Digital metering programs involve complex ecosystems of devices, networks, IoT platforms and billing systems. While vendor documentation provides guidance, many utilities are increasingly recognising the value of validating how solutions behave in practice before committing to long-term architectural decisions.
Through LaaS, customers gain access not only to a fully operational lab environment with IoT platforms and devices, but also to N3Edge’s specialist IoT engineers and utility expertise. This allows organisations to test real-world scenarios and generate evidence to support technology decisions.
Utilities are currently using LaaS for a range of purposes, including:
- Device interoperability testing across meters, loggers and IoT platforms
- Network validation, including assessing NB-IoT performance in proposed deployment areas
- Billing and data flow validation from devices through to downstream systems
- Platform migration testing before production transitions
- Device decoder and protocol validation to understand behaviour under real operating conditions
For many organisations, LaaS provides a practical alternative to building their own testing facilities - offering access to infrastructure and specialist expertise without the cost, time and capability required to establish an internal lab.
As utilities continue to progress toward digital infrastructure and connected networks, we are excited to see how customers are using LaaS to reduce risk, accelerate learning and build confidence in their digital programs.
